Trekking Accidents In Bukit Tabur

An Update

After two accidents that happened with us involved in the rescue operations, something has to be done, with aim to help prevent further accidents happening here.

An evaluation & investigation was done on the terrain at the first rope, an accident prone location in Bukit Tabur on February 14, 2009 the morning of the Valentines Day.

Rock climber Lau Choon Meng pointed out that the danger notice is too wordy, as jungle trekkers & mountain climbers just doesn't have the patient to read wordy notices.

He recommended a picture showing someone falling off the cliff with some explaination will just send the message effectively.

Appealing now, anyone who can draw an animate action of falling off the cliff, can you come forward to help ? we can't pay you in monetary form, but if you need a return of favors, we would be glad to offer advise, information on trekking here. This is because all of us are doing this on a voluntary basis with very limited fund coming from our own pocket.

There is a doctor who is aware of all the accidents happened at the first rope, she has promised to help us pay for a more permanent signboard.

You can contact me via the email address in this blog.

Almost out of natural, Rock Climber Lau asked to test out the existing rope.

According to him, the strength of the rope is enough to support the weight of an average person when he ascend or descend down the cliff, but this kind of PVC rope might be slippery during wet/rainy seasons.

So trekkers, kindly take note & beware of danger if you trek during the rainy season.

On our way to the first rope, Lau did mentioned that he came up to Bukit Tabur once after I contacted him for some help.

The time he came up was, during the Chinese New Year, which he said there may be lots of trekkers taking free time during the holidays to trek here. And so something has to be done as soon as possible.

It is an honour to know this young gentleman, who has a heart of gold and a heart that cares.

Putting down the ropes, he put on his rock climbing safety gears.

these pictures were taken from the side view at the first rope location.

together with Peter, the seasoned trekker who has just came back from trekking to Everest Base Camp, started surveying the terrain of the danger spot.

Eric, a regular trekker to Bukit Tabur and involved in at least two rescue operations, was providing more information from his obeservation of how some of the trekkers coming down the cliff

and the possiblities of how the victims will fall off the cliff.

Lau did a simulation of the climb with safety harness of course

and this experienced rock climber confirmed what we have been thinking all these while, this place is dangerous.

It is dangerous.

It is indeed very very dangerous

" Aiya ! " Lau said " Don't Play Play la !!!! "

I do not know 已故拿督沈慕羽 personally except from what is written in the newspaper on his contribution to the Chinese Community

However, reading the published Eulogy from his son 沈墨義 先生, it's really not hard to understand how this great community leader, a great patriah in his time, practising the value of love and living the tips of happiness in his own family.

10-2-2009

.......

Simple gesture of love that most people will appreciate and response to, words of care, words of kindness, words of encouragement, words of love, not only to make others happy, but i believe strongly it will make the person who loves happy.

Love is many a splendid thing, it makes you happy,

Happiness Comes From The Heart part 1 快乐 心经

I was with a supplier, discussing some business. A tattered poster on the door of his office caught my attention, after careful reading, it is none other than the aged old words of wisdom on Tips for Happiness

by Octogenarian Educationist, The late Dato' Shen Muyu 已故拿督沈慕羽

The very first Tip for Happiness listed above all else on the poster is

Do Not Complain :- Be Thankful

Complaints rob us off happiness.

Do not complaint doesn't mean living life like an idiot.....

Common sense tell us that :-

When there is a problem, look for solutions.

When there is a real reason to complain, work out what is required to settle things so you do not need to complain.

Manage expectation, manage stress.
Manage the capacity over what you can or cannot take on your plate.

Manage " The sometimes supersized ego, out of proportion, inflated oversized ego, which place life out of right perspectives. because when life is out of perspective, one tends to complain.

Isn't that doing any of the above, it can make us a little happy in life ?

We sometimes hear that, how to be happy when my husband/wife/mother/father/teacher/brother or sister/friends/others don't make me happy ?

Taking the above for analysis, can we be unhappy when another person do not make you happy ?

Why should another person makes you happy ? when they are unhappy themselves sometimes.

When you are unappreciative and egoistic, chances are, no matter what the other person does to make you happy, you will still be unhappy.

So, there is nothing others can do if you decide to be unhappy at all times.

More so happiness comes from within a person's own heart.

Babies do not complain, or babies have little to complain.

partly babies have very little about life that sucks, it is definately different when one is gaining in age, there are more and more people and things that happened, causing situation and circumstances, some within control and others, beyond their control to handle,

and it sucks.

when life sucks, normally and without fail, any immature person will carry with them an attitude with a aura, liken to the stench from garbage dump.

Carelessness can cause us to pick up the stench that cause us to sucks, directly or indirectly we are influenced, to be unhappy.

Well, complaining is the natural reaction to release the pressure resulted by blaming it on the person who passed you the stench.

Stop passing the stench to others will sometimes make us happier, than passing the same to many more, that will make the world around us unhappy.

and, famous saying that when life taste sour, make lemonade and share with others.

It's best to share not the sourness but the zing of lemonade that can help others, who is, like you and me desiring to be quench in thirst for happiness.

Which is more challenging ? to make yourself happy by being happy

or

let others make you happy and cause the whole world to be unhappy ?

Google up How To Be Thankful ,

there are lots and lots of reading materials.
Nevertheless real happiness lies in individual's desire to be happy.

In another words, each person must see the need to be happy, he must be wanting to be happy...... then only will he be happy, minus out the complaint, small or not so small that will make you unhappy.

There are lots and lots unkind fella/beyond our control situations/circumstances that can make us unhappy.

There is nothing these unkind feela/beyond our control situations/circumstances can do to us if you decide to be happy at all times.

Is it challenging to be happy ? Or is it more challenging to be unhappy.

Chap Goh Mei N Lou Sang 上山撈生

After excessive feasting during the Chinese New Year, we just can't wait to go back trekking and mountain climbing.

Meeting old trekking friends and enjoying nature.

At one of the spot which we use to rest, someone hang up beautiful origami cranes and ang pau( 红包 ) packets of good wishes

turning the place with ambience of chinese culture.

Symbolic meaning of origami cranes ( peace ) in http://www.lisashea.com/japan and Thousand Origami Cranes (千羽鶴 )

With wishes of Peace, prosperity, as well as all good wishes as, 2009 will be good and successful.

上山
撈生
Our Watermelon Lau suggested Lou Sang( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusheng) up on the mountain

It was not a bad idea after all, having worked out the logistics.

He brought along a set of Take Away Yee Sang Set ( Raw Fish Salad set) up Bukit Tabur.

Mixing all the crackers, and sweet condiments and raw fish and sauces.

We had a good time Lou Sang or tossing the small mountain of Yee Sang to a Healthy & Prosperous year.

Looks like we are putting in more calories than burning away in trekking.

It just doesn't matter where we tossed the Yee Sang, at the restaurent, at home or up on the mountain.

Everyone was having fun.

To make it more memorable and interesting next time, we should use branches from the trees instead of disposable chopstick.

And now, i have an idea.

Instead of throwing mandarin oranges into the river during Chap Goh Mei, what about have the trekkers change their mindset,

Do something different ?

Chap Goh Mei, Chinese Valentine Day,....

with jungleful of insects as witness, and birds serenading

Like minded trekkers,....,

Up on the
Mountain Top, Full Moon, Soft breezes,

Mandarin Oranges, Bananas, A cup of nice coffee, etc....

Oh my God ! it's perfect setting for singles, the unmarried in the Match Making

and you throw the mandarin oranges and bananas ....

and love blooms , like the lallang and the trees up on the mountains

But
,...

provided you can reach the mandarin oranges and bananas faster than the inhabitants of the jungles.

I heard monkeys do peel oranges and bananas with their limbs, leaving you with the peel with emails and telephone numbers intact.

Am I right in this ?

Anyone has the answer ?

Well, I do have a solution of celebrating Chap Goh Mei up on the mountain,

Be brave, do like what NIKE says

JUST DO IT,

throw whatever you want into your secret admirer's trekking bags.
