Knowing Andrew, who studies at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania in USA was when Amelia was doing her college application essay.

I have been wanting to meet him personally for so long to say " thank you " for the help he rendered to Amelia in the process of her US College application.

The first few greetings and words Andrew spoke to Mr. Ahmet, uttered in Turkish language had Mr. Ahmet laughed so heartily that they created an almost instant rapport.

Following that they talked to each other in Arabic which had even some of the tourists at the Archery Centre spelled bound.

Focus, no two way about what he wants, strategic thinker, stop to take stock in life.

What a fine young man Andrew is, someone who strives not only to be an achiever academically, but be available to some worthy causes, touching life and leaving impact on others' life ( Swarthmore Bosnia Project etc....)

The Power of Memory

A text by Lee Lee, my childhood friend

Translation

I was asked to write something to thank the teacher who has left an impact in my life. Almost immediately i am reminded of 曾玉清师, my primary school teacher who has thought us for 6 years, from Standard 1 to standard 6.

曾玉清师 was my favorite teacher, whatever she thought is still engraved in my mind. 6 years in the primary school wasn't that long, but i have fond memories of the school and this teachers.

When a primary classmate of ours, Kim Fong came back from US, dropped by to visit, with another friend Kooi Heng, then we got to know that 曾玉清师 had suffered from cancer. I was very sad.

I wanted to pay her a visit, but somehow, procrestination got a better hold of me. By the time i received the late teacher's news few months later, my favorite teacher had passed away. I regretted my procrestination and I was deeply sadden myself for not making effort to just visit her.

The above was a gist of what was written by Lee Lee, in remembrance of her favorite teacher who has thought her 6 years in the primary school.

It was our planned effort to make the teacher happy, unknowingly Lee Lee has churned out her deepest thought, and a sincere confession which comes with some degree of regret and guilt.

Lee Lee, i appreciate your openness, i thank you for sharing.

While Lee lee has excellent memories of what the teacher has thought her 40 years ago, personally I experienced something quite the opposite, not with 曾玉清师 but my primary school's Maths teacher.

Up to today, I puzzled at this particular teacher, who was my Maths teacher for 6 years in the primary school, why he hated me so much by picking fault with me, and find many ways to punish me during the Maths lesson. I still shivers at the thought of my knuckles being hit so hard with rulers, irregardless of how hard I tried to please him by doing all the works given.

For no apparent reason that I knew, the Maths teacher, before the starting of class, would call me up, isolated me to stand in front of the class, while he carried on with his lesson, the entire 30 minutes, if it was one period, and sometimes more if it was two periods. I stood there like an idiot, wondering what was done that has caused his wrath to unleash his anger towards me, but unable to escape from the humiliation & embarassment that I was subjected to.

Frankly,
I was hurting and hated to be treated in such mean ways, I didn't know what to do but endured the Maths teacher's abusive behavior. The unspoken fears did have an impact in my life then.

Growing up, I have a deep rooted hatred towards the Maths teacher, so much so it affected my learning of Maths in secondary school.

One thing I am sure now, I dislike pain-enhanced teaching, if at all it achieved the objective of learning.

For this Maths teacher,
I will say he doesn't deserve my respect of him.

And so.............., TEACHER/S......, do have a heart for the children that is put under your care.

Many many years down the road, someone may put up your picture while they blog, and listed down all the crimes you committed against humanity

The Maths teacher that I dislike most, with lousy teaching. This is Xu

Lao shi ( Xu lao shu )

or just call you up to say, hei my dear teacher, how are you ? have time for lunch or dinner ?

or during the Teacher's Day, someone you unexpected may call you to say, you are my favorite teacher,

I appreciate you.

Surely there is a value that ties up with childhood memories.

What Friendship Is To Me

Lee Lee and I share a special bonding since our childhood friendship.

We value family, friendship and appreciate teachers as well as openness in our friendship.

We may not meet as often as we like to, due to family commitments, living in separate locations in the city, busy in earning a decent living, but we keep this special bond of friendship close to our heart by calling each other from time to time.

Come Teacher’s day every year, as far as I can remember, for the past few many years, we have been calling each other , reminding one another to make a call to our teachers to wish them a Happy Teacher’s Day.

We had a chance to meet and when one of our primary school classmate, came back from US to visit his family in 2006, he too shares a desire to meet some teachers whom we have fond memories with.

Thus, we put our head together, do some friend search to find our classmates and networking , we ended up in Malacca in Teacher Fung & Teacher Lim ‘s house.

There was excitement, nostalgic moments and we had a good time reminiscing childhood memories.

Came 2009 teacher day, I suggested to Lee Lee to do something different from what we have been doing ,I suggested besides calling the the teacher to wish them Happy teacher’s day, we will share our experience in appreciating teachers, in the hope that others can learn to give an encouragement to their teacher as well.

Lee Lee has responded so well to my suggestion and she wrote me an article, which I should have posted it before the teacher’s day on May 16, 2009. However, somehow ...............thus the delay until now, well it’s never too late than never ………..

Besides calling the teachers to wish them Happy Teacher's Day, this is what was done..............and i tressure it near to my heart.

To be continued..

Mountain Climbing N Friendship

Mountain Climbing provides a unique opportunity to
foster relationship and build friendship.

Though trekkers may trek through the same path to get to the same destination,

( Click on picture above, to see a beautiful treks of a hill in Broga, Semenyih besides a Chinese temple. )

But how each of them trek through the journey, one will differs from the other.

( Click on the picture to see Broga Hill in Semenyih, Kajang Selangor )

True nature of relationship evolves and friendship is fostered, when people cross path with each other.

This is especially so during long trekking trip, that requires group members to solve the challenges over unexpected incidences that may happen in the jungles and mountains, some within the trekker's control and some outside the trekkers' control.

When people of different temperament, characters and thoughts comes together, and see things differently, as well as behaves differently, you can be quite sure to be shocked, and disbelief to know that the friend that we always see, has another side of them that we have never known at all.

To sum up, friendship is so tangible that you feel the warmth and the joy when sharing in tears and laughter.

Friendship can be view as intangible, just like the wind, once it has gone pass, you don't know how to find it back.

To carry on the mountain climbing journey, the trekkers sometime need to

...say sorry if you have to and when there is a need to, cry if that helps to release tension,

...stop crying you must, to move yourself forward, continue the trekking journey ahead.

Say forgive me to the person you hurt, and say i forgive you to the person who hurts you if that's what makes up of a friendship.

Its is no big deal if you get hurt, be real and trust again, little by little, get heal while passing through the journey, open your heart to someone who can help.

Unlearn any wrong, learn a new way to love, to cherish, and to appreciate so that the trekking journey will be pleasant along the way until everyone and you reach the destination.

The sun rises, the sun goes down, everyday,

( Click to see Sunrise in Broga Hill Semenyih )

But it is not everyday the sun rises, with a clear defined yolk.

The second, the minutes, and the hours still ticks away whether you like it or not.

Even if the sunrise is not beautiful, and the rain causes inconvenience.

whether you trek in jungle or in life, there will be another day call tomorrow, that we have exchange a day of our life with it.

I am just so convince that mountain climbing & trekking provides a unique opportunity to foster friendship.

Varieties, is what it is, making life more interesting and meaningful.

Mountain Climbing, Jungle Trekking N Progress

Sometimes I wonder how our physical body is made to withstand pressure.

Never attempt to climb any mountain or trek will means that we do not know the tolerance level we can withstand.

From a mere 1-2 KM mountain trek/day to a 25 KM of mountain trek/day, it means there is improvement.

Continue from there, we tried 1 night two days trek, follows with 3 days two nights trek, and after that 5 days 4 nights trek etc....to us it means progress.

Improvement and progress builds confidence.

After we have done the easy/relatively easy, or difficult/relatively difficult trek progressing one to the other, there should be no reason why a 12 to 17 days of trekking trip in Annapurna Circuit Treks, The Everest , or The Sikkim, Kanchenjunga and Gangtok, Himalayas that most our of friends talked about so much, O any mountains beyond in other continents is not imposible should we choose to head towards that directions and have the resources for it.

Whatever length of days in trekking, if we do not enjoy the journey, such as enjoying the nature, the plants and the flowers,

Click to see the wild fruit that looks like ' corn comb " found at the peak of Broga Hill, Semenyih

the insects and the crawlies and the animals, the buddies etc....etc....etc that trekking has offer and make something memorable.....

when you come back, our journal entry in trekking will be

I wake up in the morning, I start to trek,
in the evening I rest

The next day I start to trek,
in the evening I eat, rest and sleep

day after tomorrow, I start to trek,
.............tomorow i will wake up and trek..

day after it will be like that too.

Isn't this parallel with living life ?

Today I live life when i wake up in the morning, and night comes, I sleep, and tomorrow, I wake up again, and night I sleep................

Acknowledge the fact that progress and improvement will bring meaning to life, stop by to enjoy what the trek can offer, will be more interesting than just rushing through it just to get to the peak.

How boring it will be to trek through the jungle just to get to the peak without enjoying the journey.

worst if you are trekking through life in that way.
